Framing Art Prints

Framing Art Prints - A variety of art frames

Framing art prints can be an art in itself and affect the way the whole piece is scene in the home! It can also make or break the space it’s in so it’s important to get the look you’re going for so here’s some tips! Here are some options for how I recommend framing an art print:

FOR SMALLER SIZES: 5x7 to 18x24

Smaller Sizes: Framing Art Prints Behind Glass

  1. This is probably the classic way you would think about framing a piece of art, a photograph, or an art print. I recommend framing any paper print behind glass to protect it and using a mat to give the painting some more presence on the wall. A mat just leaves a little white space to consider the art a bit and give it room to shine. I recommend framing smaller pieces behind glass as well as larger works on paper or raw canvas. Larger canvas prints can be framed without glass to stand on their own and show off their texture! There are plenty of ways to frame art prints at pretty much any price point:
    A. Buying a Pre-made Frame at a store like Anthropologie, Pottery Barn, West Elm or Target or Williams Sonoma.
    B. Shopping a Thrift Store or antique store for a cool frame with character. (TIP: if you like the frame, but don’t like the mat, get a new one here! This Etsy shop cuts custom mats so you can fit my standard print sizes into your non-standard frame. I recommend the Avillion/Chine White color instead of stark white but that’s just me) You could also play with a darker color for a moodier feel—SO gorgeous! If you like the look of gold frames but don’t have the right color gold, consider spray painting the frame black and using Rub ‘n Buff for the perfect vintage look.
    C. Custom Framing (or if you’re in Asheville, using Frugal Framer—a diy frame shop if you know how to frame)
I don’t think it’s necessary to get everything custom framed because there are some gorgeous options out there that will save you money and look amazing but it is always an option if you want a more designed or specific feel. Custom framing is great for floating pieces within the mat or using creative mats to frame the artwork.

FOR LARGER SIZES: 24x36, 30x40, 36x48+

  1. Stretching Large Loose Canvas Art Prints

I print my large art prints on high quality loose canvas for the safest shipping option to ensure it doesn’t get damaged en route. However, if you want that canvas look, you can take it to your local framer and they will stretch it for you. If you are wanting to do this, let me know so I can add a bit of space around the edges of the print for wrapping. Gallery wrapped canvases can hang without a frame for a more contemporary look since the art will be wrapped around the sides. If you want to add a frame, floater frames work great for these canvases because they are simple, elevated, and allow the art to shine.

  2. Affordable Framing for Large Loose Canvas

If you are wanting to hang a large print but need a more cost effective option, try this minimal 2-sided magnetic frame. These are lovely frames that resemble vintage map hangings and are both cost effective and beautiful.

  3. This GORGEOUS Large Frame Kit from Laurie Ann Art

This Oversized Print Frame Kit is, in my opinion, the most gorgeous option for framing canvas art prints 30”x40” or larger. It comes unassembled but its a tap together (which makes it the easiest thing to put together.) The natural wood color is just perfect and could look good in any room.

  1. The Most Affordable Option: Loose Canvas Metal Frame

The last option I’ll throw out there for framing art prints is using the IKEA Bjorksta Frame. This frame is the most affordable frame for large prints EVER! It comes unassembled but according to my sweet sister in-law, its very easy! The loose canvas is pushed into the back of the frame in little slots and held taught. It only comes in black and gray but a little Rub ‘n Buff works wonders. The sizes are standard to Sweden so they are a bit off from my prints but the 30”x46.5” would fit the 36x48 and you can trim the excess off with scissors.

I hope this gives you some ideas for framing art prints. Shop art prints now!
